Small Systems Solutions won a contract to conduct a national study, and formulate a generic framework for the use of Open Source Software (OSS) in Saudi Arabia. The purpose of this Open Source framework is to provide Saudi government agencies, public and private companies, universities and research institutions the guidance on what Open Source Software (OSS) are available, and what suits their businesses, as alternatives to Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software.
The outcome of the framework is to come up with specific technologies – one or two technologies per IT field, as an alternative to the COTS software. The classifications shall cover all support ecosystem components needed to attain a cohesive and complete IT development environment, including software development suites, repositories and version control, testing suites, deployment tools, configuration management, …etc. The framework shall also cover all IT infrastructure components needed to host and operate the firm efficiently and effectively. Such components would include the OS, IT Service Management (ITSM) suite, email service components, account management systems, network services, web services, virtualization and cloud infrastructure, …etc.
